Menendez brothers hail extraordinary Netflix | TV Shows

Upon its release last year, the series quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the most viewed shows on the streaming platform. Despite the brothers serving life sentences without the possibility of parole, the Netflix series thrust their case back into public consciousness.

This renewed attention prompted then-Los Angeles County DA George Gascón to propose that the brothers be resentenced. This suggestion followed the receipt of new evidence related to the case by his office.

However, the new LA County DA, Nathan Hochman, who assumed the role last December, announced last month that he was retracting Gascón’s motion for resentencing.

TMZ has conducted an interview with the Menendez brothers, delving into their life in prison, future aspirations, and their thoughts on the Netflix series about their case. The interview was broadcasted in the United States under the title “The Menendez Brothers: The Prison Interview” on April 7.

The interview is accessible globally through TMZ’s YouTube channel and the Two Angry Men podcast. Hosts Harvey Levin and Mark Geragos engaged with the brothers via a phone call from prison, with the conversation occurring in February of this year.

During the interview, when questioned about whether they had watched the Murphy-produced Netflix series from behind bars, Lyle expressed approval for the show, the actors’ portrayals, and its overall impact.

Lyle remarked: “We were able to see quite a bit of it. I watched some of it through video chat that they allow us to do here and obviously we’ve seen a million clips of it on TV and heard about a lot about it so we feel like we’ve seen the entire thing but we have not yet.”

He continued, reflecting on the media’s role and the influence of Ryan Murphy’s project: “To me it’s just a funny thing the media and Ryan Murphy’s project was very widely disseminated and it really did actually move a lot of people to understand the childhood trauma that that Eric and I suffered and particularly the horrific stuff that Eric suffered.”

Lyle went on to say: “Cooper Koch’s portrayal of Eric and his trauma was quite remarkable, as was Nicholas (Alexander Chavez). I believe that in the end, many people were enlightened about what can occur even in wealthy households, behind walls, hedges, and manicured lawns. I think it opened a lot of people’s eyes, and that’s always beneficial.”

Despite initial criticism upon its release, it appears that over time, the brothers have managed to view the series positively, acknowledging its significant role in their healing process.

Lyle further commented: “Once you shine a light on it, the bullying and trauma tend to find healing or recourse. I feel like Ryan Murphy’s project did just that, and for that reason, I think we are grateful.”
