Newark mayor slams Trump-appointed US attorney | Political News

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has damaged his silence after being launched from custody following his arrest at an immigration facility he was touring.

The longtime Democratic mayor and New Jersey gubernatorial candidate was arrested Friday by authorities after being accused of trespassing at the Delaney Hall Facility in Newark. According to a prison criticism filed in New Jersey district court Friday by Homeland Security Special Agent Ricky Patel, Baraka was touring alongside three Democratic New Jersey congressmen and attracting native protestors. Baraka was launched from custody later in the night.

During his remarks, Baraka focused Alina Habba, the interim U.S. Attorney General for the District of New Jersey, appointed by President Trump, who has supported his arrest and alleged that he “willingly” broke the law.

“The reality is, Alina Habba wasn’t there. She doesn’t know what happened,” Baraka advised CNN’s Kaitlan Collins Friday night. “I was there for over an hour in that space, and nobody ever told me to move.

Doubling down, he added, “I used to be in there for over an hour. Not a single particular person.. I didn’t enter that place unlawfully. I didn’t break any legal guidelines.”

He claimed on CNN that a Homeland Security agent had later entered the scene and “escalated the state of affairs,” whereby the elected official was slated to hold a press conference after his tour.

After his arrest, Habba wrote on X, “The Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, dedicated trespass and ignored a number of warnings from Homeland Security Investigations to take away himself from the ICE detention middle in Newark, New Jersey, this afternoon. He has willingly chosen to disregard the law. That won’t stand in this state. He has been taken into custody. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.”

Habba, who has served as a personal attorney for President Trump, also went on Fox News, doubling down on her claims. “I’m gonna tell the truth and correct them. Congresspeople have the right to investigate, and we allowed them in, number one. Number two, the mayor was actually inside the facility, was warned, was asked to leave several times.

“More than once, [he] refused to leave, was put under arrest inside the facility, walked out when he was told he was under arrest, and then was cuffed. That is what happened.”

She later added, “It’s called grandstanding, unfortunately. And when you break the law, there’s no grandstanding that will help you. Period, the end.”

Trump’s immigration forces reopened the ability back in March. The 1,000-bed detention middle is anticipated to play a massive position in native immigration operations.

Baraka was among a number of lawmakers at the scene on Friday, including Democratic New Jersey representatives Monica McIver, Bob Menendez Jr., and Bonnie Watson Coleman, to tour the ability. Fellow gubernatorial candidate Sean Spiller also later appeared at the scene.

Amid the tour, Baraka and the three Congressmen waited in a fenced car parking zone as protestors flooded exterior the non-public facility.

“This most assuredly is the most discomforting, concerning visit we have had,” Rep. Coleman said of the visit. “And what we experienced was the weaponization, of the abuse of power, that this administration has given ICE to do. ICE is out of control.”

Baraka has tried to shut down the operation by suing the non-public company that runs the ability, claiming it doesn’t have correct metropolis permits.
