European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa have reportedly traveled to China to meet with President Xi Jinping, hoping to persuade him to strain Russia to finish the battle in Ukraine.
It was reported that von der Leyen and Costa made their method to China after Xi refused to settle for a summit invitation from Brussels. While in Berlin, von der Leyen informed Xi that relations between the EU and China had reached an “inflection point.”
“As our cooperation has deepened, so have the imbalances.” She added. “It is vital for China and Europe to acknowledge our respective concerns and come forward with real solutions.”
During his opening remarks, Costa acknowledged an imbalance in the economic relations between the two countries. “We need concrete progress on issues related to trade and economy. And we both want our relationship to be balanced, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial,” he said.
Costa also slammed Beijing and the role it played in supporting Russia in the Ukraine conflict. “As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, we call on China to use its influence on Russia to respect the U.N. Charter and to bring an end to its war of aggression against Ukraine,” Costa said.
