Florida has announced that it is going to open a second immigration detention facility in north Florida, just six weeks after it launched the controversial Everglades heart recognized as “Alligator Alcatraz.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Thursday said that the new facility, dubbed “Deportation Depot,” will likely be housed at the Baker Correctional Institution, west of Jacksonville.
DeSantis said after the opening of the Everglades facility, officers decided that “additional capacity” was needed.
“The reason of this is not to just house people indefinitely. We want to process, stage and then return illegal aliens to their home country,” he said.
“This is an important national priority not only of President Trump but of the American people,” he added.
Officials said that the new facility is anticipated to maintain more than 1,300 detainees.
DeSantis said the ability is anticipated to be operational soon but stopped short of offering an opening date. He added that the price of the ability will likely be reimbursed by federal companions.
