Jameis Winston is a former Heisman Trophy winner, No. 1 draft decide and NFL passing yards chief.
And now he could possibly be a third-string quarterback.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll declined again Friday to reveal the pecking order behind quarterback Russell Wilson. Rookie Jaxson Dart is listed forward of Winston on the unofficial depth chart after enjoying forward of Winston in all three preseason video games and working the second-team offense over Winston for most of training camp.
So, how is Winston handling the fact that he could possibly be inactive Sunday against the Commanders?
“Jameis has been a very valuable player to our football team — not just our quarterback room,” Daboll said. “A true professional. I think he’s added a lot — include Russ in this as well — to Jaxson as a young player. But he’s a leader on our football team. I think he wants to do everything he can do to help our football team, which is the most important.”

Winston was unavailable to the media this week, but one workforce source told The Post that he expects the 11-year veteran to settle for his function without ruffling feathers because he desires to be in New York as a means to jump-start his post-playing media profession.
Winston gave receiver Jalin Hyatt — who was pissed off with his minimized function last yr and stays No. 4 on the depth chart — a long pep speak in the locker room Thursday.

“Just stay focused, just keep being consistent,” Hyatt said of Winston’s message. “Keep going with the practice habits that I’ve been doing and then they will show up in games. It’s good to hear from a veteran quarterback that has played at a high level. I know the belief and trust that they have in me.”
WR Malik Nabers didn’t follow Friday as the Giants opted to “back down” on his workload because his “back is a little tight,” Daboll said.
Nabers was not listed on the ultimate injury report.
“He’ll be fine for the game,” Daboll said. “He’ll be alright.”
CB Cor’Dale Flott said after follow that he had not been told of any plans about whether or not he’ll start. The Athletic reported before follow that Flott will start and get replaced by Deonte Banks on third downs as a means to make the most of both kids in a place battle.
“I’ll be ready to roll,” Flott told The Post. “I feel great about it. I’ll make the most of the opportunities and, when I’m not in there, keep my legs warm and my mind fresh.”
The Giants have been outscored 53-3 during the first half of their three season openers under Daboll. After rallying to beat the Titans in 2022, they misplaced by a mixed 68-6 to the Cowboys in 2023 and Vikings in 2024. Is getting off to a fast start a pregame emphasis?
“Really, our focus is on this year,” Daboll said, “what we can do this year, the team that they have this year, keys to the game, things we need to do to be successful.”
