Streets of Madrid Jammed With Sheep, and Thats

Here in the United States, on Saturday, the streets of many of our major cities have been packed with nitwits on parade. We’ve coated those occasions extensively, and there’s no need to rehash that right here, again. No, now we must flip our consideration to the streets of Madrid, Spain, where the streets have been not too long ago packed with sheep and goats, in an annual pageant called “Transhumance.”

 The annual event has to do with the historical past of grazing lands in the world of town, and how the animals are moved from one seasonal space to another.

Madrid’s streets have been baa-dly jammed Sunday, not by protesters or soccer followers but by a flock of sheep and goats being led through the Spanish capital in an annual pageant that honors the world’s rural heritage.

The ovine parade of bells, bleats, baas and horn music turned heads and drew crowds of 1000’s. Every 12 months, organizers of the Transhumance Festival recreate the pastoral apply of shifting livestock to new grazing grounds.

The pageant also spotlights the environmental advantages of conventional grazing, in which livestock are used to clear brush and other flammable undergrowth, lowering the unfold of wildfires.

The motion between seasonal pastures is called transhumance.

Being the proud son of a cattleman, I have a tendency to look at sheep and goats with some delicate suspicion. There are few livestock species as dumb as a sheep, and goats current just the other drawback: They are intelligent, they’ll climb, and if there’s something that smells worse than an outdated billy goat, I’m not conscious of what it could be. When I used to be a child, a local household in our space saved goats. Their outdated billy used to love to climb the big box elder tree that overhung the freeway going past their property. The outdated billy was recognized regionally as “Old Stinky,” and passing under that tree, even at freeway pace, required rolling up the truck home windows and holding your breath if Old Stinky was in his perch. 

It was actually that ba-a-a-d.

Now that the annual event is out of the best way, I’ve herd that the people of Madrid have a lot of cleansing up to do. Maybe they may keep away from it by going on the lamb.
