We’re on Day 23 of the Schumer Shutdown, with no end in sight. Vote No. 12 in the Senate on the clean persevering with decision was also a no — this time, 54-46. They did affirm William W. Mercer as a U.S. District Court choose for Montana. 

Today, they vote on the invoice to pay important authorities staff — uncertain they will get to 60 on that, but we’ll see.

MORNING MUSING

Recently, I mused on the fact that Dogs Don’t Care About Your Politics. I can say that with confidence, not only because of my own pupper, but because of the candy souls I’m privileged to have a tendency to every Saturday morning at the shelter where I volunteer. They will be wild and rambunctious and cussed and messy and pungent and needy and discover all method of methods to problem you, but never once has one of my fees said so a lot as a “Woof” about politics. And I’m good with that. 

I began volunteering there after I misplaced my beloved Golden, Pringle, six years in the past this month, as that was where I’d adopted him from 11 years prior. I wasn’t prepared for a new canine of my own at that level, but I wished to do one thing to honor his reminiscence. So, I grew to become half of the Saturday morning crew. That means I get up every Saturday at 5:30 AM and make the 40-minute drive to the shelter, where my fellow volunteers and I take the canine out to the yard to potty, feed them, medicate those who need it, and clean their indoor kennels. 

It’s laborious work bodily. It’s not unusual for me to come home with newly acquired bruises and such, and I undoubtedly get my steps in on Saturday. But I can truthfully say it is one of the best issues I’ve ever achieved. For a number of hours each week, it takes me utterly out of my head, offline, away from all the noise of life, and focuses my vitality utterly on caring for other beings. It’s good for my soul. 

But the toughest half of it is not the bodily half of it — it is the emotional half of it. Because these candy, furry angels only keep with us for a temporary time, and it is always unhappy to say goodbye. Most of the time, it is because they’re adopted and head off to a new home for comfortable tails, hopefully for many years. Some of them keep with us longer because they have not fairly discovered the suitable home just yet. Dave, a 6-year-old Akbash, was one of those. He was a big boy — 90 pounds-plus — and if he did not need to transfer someplace, he wasn’t transferring. (And pulling on his lead wasn’t a great thought — he’d let you recognize that.) Sometimes, you might coax him with one of his particular treats. 

Having grow to be a longer-term resident of the shelter, Dave grew to become the de facto king of it. So a lot so that we lately constructed him his own canine door that allowed him to transfer between his indoor and out of doors kennels as he happy. He had his own personal pink pig stuffy that he adored. We spoiled him a bit, and he did not thoughts. 

The method you knew Dave was in a good temper was when he’d look at you with his soulful eyes and slowly roll over for a stomach scratch. He cherished having his stomach rubbed. He’d grow to be a very pricey good friend of mine, one I always appeared ahead to seeing each Saturday. 

And right here we have now the toughest half of all…Dave left us all of the sudden last evening. We do not yet know why. My big, candy, sometimes grumpy, always pricey good friend has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. And I’m sure he is fortunately working free. Me? I’m a blubbering mess. So, I hope y’all will forgive me if today, I felt called to share Dave’s story and why my shelter gig is the worst best job I’ve ever had.
