Donald Trump told Chinese President Xi Jinping “we should stick together” after their assembly in South Korea on Thursday, a lip reader claimed.
The leaders of the two largest global economies met for one hour and 40 minutes in South Korea, a stop on Trump’s tour of Asian nations aimed at settling commerce disputes.
Following their assembly, footage emerged of Trump and Xi exchanging pleasantries exterior the venue.
Lip-reading professional Nicola Hickling analyzed the footage, which lacks audible dialogue, and believes she noticed a telling remark.
“From the moment Trump says ‘We should stick together’ to the quiet follow-up ‘Let’s keep working together… okay, I’ll speak to you about it… I’m sure we can work something out,’ the exchange paints a picture of back-channel diplomacy that cameras caught but the microphones didn’t,” Hickling claimed.
“Xi’s brief glance down, hesitant nod, and pursed lips speak volumes about the tension in that moment,” she added.
“It’s exactly the kind of off-mic content that gives a sharper global angle on power dynamics, personal tone, and unfiltered dialogue at the world’s top table in real time.”
The two nations have had friction as Washington imposed hefty tariffs on Chinese imports, blamed China for worsening the American opioid disaster and accused Beijing of supporting Iran-backed Houthi forces.
During the televised assembly, however, Trump and Xi exchanged flattery, with Xi saying “it feels warm” to see Trump even as the nations have “frictions now and then.”
“In the face of winds, waves and challenges, you and I at the helm of China and U.S. relations should stay the right course and ensure the steady sailing forward of the giant ship of China-U.S. relations,” Xi told Trump. “I always believe that China’s development goes hand-in-hand with your vision to make America great again. Our two countries are fully able to help each other succeed and prosper together.”

Trump also had reward for Xi, calling the Chinese chief a “great leader of a great country,” including that he thinks “we’re going to have a fantastic relationship for a long period of time.”
Trump’s aggressive use of tariffs since returning to the White House for a second time period, mixed with China’s retaliatory limits on exports of uncommon earth parts, gave the assembly newfound urgency.
