Celebrity Race Across the World was halted “for safety reasons” due to protests in Guatemala.

The current sequence of the BBC programme sees the celeb contestants journeying 5,900km across Central America, from Isla Mujeres in Mexico to Guajira Peninsula, South America’s northernmost level. In Thursday’s episode of the show (November 13), Roman Kemp and his sister Harleymoon, along with Anita Rani and her father Bal, discovered their travels disrupted by the civil unrest.

The show’s narrator explained that “local protests had escalated into a national uprising”, stories the Mirror. With uprisings and roads blocked, the race was on maintain for Roman and Anita.

However, other contributors – Dylan Llewellyn and his mom Jackie, and couple Molly Rainford and Tyler West – managed to evade the chaos by taking a different route.

Roman and his sister have been en route to the next checkpoint when they obtained a message stating: “A national strike has been announced in Guatemala and many major roads have been blocked. For safety reasons, your race will be paused. This is an ongoing situation, and an update will be issued later today.”

Anita and Bal, who had spent the night time in the Guatemalan highlands, have been informed that the roads wouldn’t be satisfactory.

“We’re in lockdown in Guatemala,” the broadcaster revealed. “So basically, we’re trapped now.”

The pair had been in the lead, but Anita continued: “So our advantage is…” “Nothing we can do, so why worry about it?” her father responded.

“There’s part of me that’s absolutely like you, very philosophical about this because there’s nothing we can do,” she acknowledged. “But there is another part of my brain that is very much, oh dear.”

“What if it goes on for days? Is the race over for us?” she questioned.

Fortunately, the scenario improved and the opponents have been permitted to continue the race once it was secure to proceed.
