A BBC journalist has been left heartbroken after the death of his “wife and best friend”. BBC Northern Ireland business editor John Campbell announced on Wednesday (December 17) that his wife Fiona Gribben had died following “two years of too much pain and sadness”.
He announced today: “Fiona Gribben, my wife and best friend, died this morning. The last two years have had too much pain and sadness. But also great moments of love, fulfilment and kindness. We are lost without her.” Tributes immediately flooded in from followers, associates and colleagues.
MP Julian Smith wrote: “John I am so, so sorry.” Northern Ireland’s deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly said: “I am so sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences to you, all the family and Fiona’s friends at this difficult time.”
BBC star Marie-Louise Connolly added: “Fiona, a beautiful woman inside and out. As a family you’ve had the most difficult time. But so much love together. Fiona is now at peace. And John your BBC family is here for you. May Fiona Rest In Peace.”
Former UUP chief Doug Beattie said: “I have no words that would adequately express my condolences John. May you find peace in the memories of a love that is never lost.”
While deputy UUP chief Robbie Butler said: “So sorry to hear your sad news, John. Thoughts and prayers with you all.”
Fiona died “peacefully” at Northern Ireland Hospice, surrounded by household. She leaves behind a son, Max, and her obituary lists her as a “cherished wife, mother and sister”.
Family flowers only have been requested for Fiona’s funeral, and donations might be given in lieu to Northern Ireland Hospice.
