Venezuela has accused Donald Trump of making “warmongering” threats after the president called for “a total and complete” blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers getting into and leaving the nation.
“Venezuela is utterly surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America,” Trump wrote in a prolonged post.
In response, Caracas said it has the best to commerce in the Caribbean Sea and keep possession over its natural sources, despite “warmongering threats.”
The authorities described Trump’s “irrational military blockade” order as a “grotesque threat,” while accusing the U.S. of making an attempt to “steal” the nation’s wealth.
Trump’s escalation in rhetoric comes after U.S. forces seized an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast last week, as Caracas stays on alert amid fears of an imminent ground invasion by Washington’s troops.
The Republican president has alleged Venezuela has been utilizing oil to fund drug trafficking and other crimes.
Weeks and months before the oil tanker seizure, the U.S. had been building up army presence in the Caribbean Sea, with Venezuela bordering to the north. After the raid, Maduro said the U.S. “kidnapped the crew” and “stole” the ship.
The U.S. has also focused alleged Venezuelan drug-smuggling boats.
