Denmark deploys soldiers to Greenland as Trump | Political News

Denmark has reportedly deployed a mild detachment of superior troops and new navy tools to Greenland as U.S. President Donald Trump alerts Washington is prepared to make a transfer on the territory.
Reports of superior unit deployments have been initially revealed by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. An advance unit from the Danish Armed Forces is said to have already been deployed and to be tasked with organizing logistics forward of any main power that could arrive later.
“We are now moving forward with the whole issue of a more permanent and increased presence in Greenland by the Danish Armed Forces, but also with the participation of other countries,” Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen told reporters on Wednesday. “Just as we noticed in 2025, when other NATO nations took half in workout routines and training actions in Greenland, we’ll also see this again in 2026.”
Following news of the deployment, President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social website to reiterate his stance on buying Greenland from Denmark.
“The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security,” Trump posted on Wednesday morning. “It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!”

“NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES,” Trump added. “Anything less than that is unacceptable.”
The deployment comes a day after Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a joint convention with Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that his nation will prioritize NATO and the European Union over the U.S.
“If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark, we choose Denmark,” Nielsen said. “We choose NATO, we choose the Kingdom of Denmark, we choose the EU.”

Nielsen, who spoke after Frederiksen, added that his nation just isn’t for sale, as Trump has repeatedly recommended.
“One thing must be clear to everyone: Greenland does not want to be owned by the U.S.,” the Greenland prime minister said. “Greenland does not want to be governed by the U.S., Greenland does not want to be part of the U.S.”
“We choose the Greenland we know today, which is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
In latest weeks, President Trump has once again raised the suggestion of buying Greenland, arguing that the U.S. wants to secure the mineral-rich island to forestall Russia or China from doing so.
In a New York Times interview printed last week, the president said he has to possess the whole thing of the nation, instead of just exercising a long-standing treaty that provides the U.S. huge permission to make the most of Greenland for navy posts.
“I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can’t do with, you’re talking about a lease or a treaty,” Trump said in the interview. “Ownership gives you things and elements that you can’t get from just signing a document.”
In earlier statements, Trump has also threatened the nation, saying, “If we don’t do it the easy way, we’re going to do it the hard way,” without offering particulars as to what that entailed.
Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet the Danish and Greenlandic overseas ministers at the White House on Wednesday. According to GWN, the assembly will focus on de-escalating the battle and discovering a resolution that satisfies the Trump administration.
“This is the most important meeting in modern Greenland’s history,” Noa Redington, an analyst and former political adviser to the earlier Danish premier Helle Thorning-Schmidt, told the news outlet.
