NATO troops arrive in Greenland as Trump ramps up | Political News

When President Donald Trump said something less than U.S. control of Greenland can be “unacceptable,” NATO countries like Germany sent its troops to the Arctic island right away.

The European countries, Canada and the U.S are part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the security alliance composed of thirty-two member countries. NATO’s Article 5 policy states an attack on one member, such as Greenland, is an attack on all members and requires assistance from supporting nations.

GWN reported that Germany’s Defense Ministry is responding to Denmark’s request to strengthen regional security in Greenland. Germany will conduct military observation, the same outlet wrote.

Similarly, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on X that the Swedish Armed Forces will arrive in Greenland on Wednesday.

“They are half of a group from a number of allied nations. Together, they may put together for upcoming parts within the framework of the Danish exercise Operation Arctic Endurance,” Kristersson said. “It is at Denmark’s request that Sweden is sending personnel from the Armed Forces.”

Meanwhile, England and Norway are supporting an “Arctic Sentry” NATO mission, a military co-operation that would counter Russian threats while reassuring the U.S. that Europe is committed to protecting Greenland, Politico reported on Thursday.

Trump has insisted the U.S is taking Greenland, the Danish-controlled region, for national security purposes before China and Russia do so.

“The United States wants Greenland for the aim of National Security,” Trump said, calling it “very important” for the “Golden Dome” the nation is building on a Truth Social post from Wednesday.

Denmark strongly opposed Trump’s rhetoric.

Denmark strongly opposed Trump’s rhetoric.

“We didn’t manage to change the American position,” Denmark’s international minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told reporters after Danish and Greenland officers met with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday. “It’s clear that the president has this wish of conquering over Greenland.”

Even those from the president’s celebration have shown opposition to annexing Greenland. GOP Rep. Don Bacon, 62, from Nebraska said he would lean in direction of impeaching Trump if the president makes use of navy drive to take over Greenland, the home member told the Omaha World-Herald on Wednesday.
