Mitch McConnell hospitalized with ‘flu-like | Political News

Sen. Mitch McConnell from Kentucky was hospitalized Monday evening after “experiencing flu-like symptoms” over the weekend, his workplace said on Tuesday. 

“In an abundance of warning, after experiencing flu-like symptoms over the weekend, Senator McConnell checked himself into a local hospital for analysis last evening,” spokesman David Popp said in a assertion. “He is grateful for the excellent care he is receiving. He is in regular contact with his staff and looks forward to returning to Senate business.” Popp added that McConnell is expected to recover.

McConnell, 83, has faced health concerns in recent years. He suffered a concussion in December 2023 and has frozen on camera, multiple times. The Mirror US also reported the time McConnell fell at the Russell basement of the Senate after an individual asked him a question.

“It’s painful to watch, not because of politics but because it is human,” one user wrote of the video where McConnell fell. “Age comes for everybody, even those who once appeared unshakeable. There’s strength in stepping apart when the second calls for it, but ego hardly ever listens.”

The senator was also seen with a wheelchair after falling in the Capitol back in February. 2025. A spokesperson for McConnell reassured the public that he was “fantastic” that the wheelchair was simply a “purely as a precautionary measure.”

McConnell said he would retire last year at the end of his term and would not go for re-election in 2026. He has been the longest-serving Senate leader in the county and one of the oldest sitting senators.

McConnell has been working in politics for over half a century. During his time as the Senate minority and majority leader, the Kentucky senator has gone against President Donald Trump. That consists of when he voted against three of Trump’s cupboard members like Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense, Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services.

After the January 6 riots, McConnell said Trump was accountable.

“Former President Trump’s actions preceding the riot were a disgraceful dereliction of duty … There is no question that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of that day … If President Trump were still in office, I would have carefully considered whether the House managers proved their specific charge,” he said in a 20-minute speech on the Senate ground. 

Trump has also fired at the senator back in April 2021, calling him a “dumb son of a b****,” at a closed pressed event, according to those attending the  Republican donors event.
