Texas HS Swim Team Mounts Swim-a-Thon to Buoy

School custodians are the invisible and often unsung heroes of training, and no college would find a way to survive without them. 

In faculties across the nation, custodians do more than keep campuses clean. Earlier this 12 months, for instance, Andy Markus, a custodian in Utah, was named the National Education Support Professional of the Year by the National Education Association for his mentoring, which has improved college students’ conduct and tutorial engagement.

And when custodians keep at a college for years, they develop experience and institutional information that might be invaluable, college leaders say. But often, faculties face issues with retaining these workers, in half due to low pay.

According to Zip Recruiter, the median average wage for most custodians is around $35,000 yearly. That’s not a lot, notably if one has a household and lives in or around a high-rent district. The energy of group led to one thing good for a college custodian at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson ISD.

The swim group realized their custodian, Mr. Le, was sick. He’d been out for eight weeks with a healthcare issue. And, the youngsters needed to help. In a week, they organized a swim-a-thon to raise money for him.

Despite the depictions of nefarious or drunken custodians in tv and movie, this place actually does (and ought to) command respect. Just like administrative and educating employees, custodians are extremely vetted and staffed by reliable people who most likely do a better job watching over your kids than the principal and some of the lecturers. For more than an hour on January 16, college students swam non-stop, logging more than 4,000 meters, with every lap devoted to serving to their beloved custodian, who was always there for them with a smile and a high-five.

At the end of the swim-a-thon, Mr. Le arrived at the natatorium for a large shock. They’d raised more than $17,000!

And there was more. Coach Eric Ewing shared the great news that they’d also gotten Mr. Le a new car and bike to help him get to work.

He’d been strolling or biking an hour each means to get to work.

Mr. Le is blessed not just in the generosity of the items, but in the love and respect of the scholars, and the supportive embrace of the college group. You cannot put a price tag on that.
