Trump announces $9B Arctic ships contract to take | Political News

The United States is assembling a $9 billion fleet of Arctic ships amid ongoing tensions with Russia and China.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced on Wednesday that it has accomplished the award of contracts for 11 Arctic Security Cutters, fulfilling the order from the president to quickly increase America’s icebreaker fleet. The transfer comes as half of a $9 billion invoice signed by the White House in October.

The invoice said it “addresses growing strategic competition, aggressive military posturing, and economic encroachment by foreign adversaries, all of which threaten U.S. interests in the Arctic.”

The latest award has been allocated to back the construction of up to five Arctic Security Cutters, bringing the President’s initial order to completion. The U.S. Coast Guard said the move marks” a historic milestone in US Arctic functionality.”

It continued: “Together, these cutters will kind the spine of a revitalised US icebreaker fleet, defending US sovereignty and dominance in the Arctic.”

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said: “America has been an Arctic nation for over 150 years, and we’re finally appearing prefer it under President Trump.

“Our adversaries continue to look to grow their presence in the Arctic, equipping the Coast Guard with Arctic Security Cutters will help reassert American maritime dominance there.

“Revitalising the US Coast Guard’s icebreaking capabilities is essential for our security and prosperity, and today’s announcement is an important step in that direction.”

U.S. shipbuilding company, Davie Defense, Inc. will be tasked with constructing two Arctic Security Cutters at Helsinki Shipyard in Finland and three more domestically. The first Arctic Security Cutter is expected to be delivered in early 2028.

The US Coast Guard said: “Acquisition of Arctic Security Cutters helps the Coast Guard’s modernisation under Force Design 2028, remodeling the Service into a more agile, succesful and responsive preventing power.”

There is a growing necessity for a strong U.S. presence in the Arctic Ocean, as the U.S. strives to counter increasing military competition from both Russia and China.

Russia has reopened Soviet-era bases and increased military activities in the Arctic. China has been gradually pursuing a “Polar Silk Road,” which might enable it to prolong its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) into the Arctic.
