Tech firms need to build their own power plants to assist their energy-hungry AI tasks, President Trump said during Tuesday night time’s State of the Union speech — his latest effort to ease power prices for extraordinary Americans.
“I’m pleased to announce that I have negotiated the new rate-payer protection pledge. You know what that is? We’re telling the major tech companies that they have the obligation to provide for their own power needs,” Trump said.
“We have an old grid,” he continued. “It may never deal with the type of numbers, the quantity of electrical energy that’s needed.

“So I’m telling them, they can build their own plant. They’re going to produce their own electricity. It will ensure the company’s ability to get electricity while at the same time, lowering prices of electricity for you.”
Trump didn’t elaborate on which firms have dedicated to the pledge. The White House is planning to host tech firms in early March to finalize plans, two sources acquainted with the matter told GWN.
OpenAI, Google and other firms at the forefront of the artificial intelligence race have confronted strain in current months over considerations that their formidable tasks are straining the power grid and main to greater prices for households.
Some corporations, including Anthropic and Microsoft, have already announced efforts to cowl electrical energy prices related with powering their AI data facilities.
As Trump spoke, Anthropic’s head of coverage Sarah Heck reiterated that the firm has dedicated to “covering 100% of electricity price increases that consumers face from our data centers.”

Elsewhere, OpenAI’s Sam Altman acknowledged during a current look at a summit in India that the tech industry would seemingly need to transfer toward different power sources as demand will increase.
