President Donald Trump lashed out on-air at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a stance that rankled his conservative base.
On April 12, Fox News shared a partial quote on social media from President Trump, 79, taken from a telephone interview with host Maria Bartiromo on their show, Sunday Morning Futures. The caption read, “President Trump expresses his frustration with NATO over the ongoing Iran conflict, insisting that NATO allies have not stepped up sufficiently to support the United States in its efforts.”
Trump acknowledged, “They weren’t there for us,” referring to the intergovernmental army alliance. This comes as Donald Trump taunted Iran with JD Vance in the air en route to the peace talks.
Conservative voices then took to their socials and pushed back against Trump’s remarks, contending that the president was disparaging 32 member nations, including Canada, Sweden, and 30 European international locations. Mark Rutte has served as NATO Secretary General since October 2024.
One critic remarked, “Calling NATO leaders cowards multiple times, threatening Greenland, mocking the main European country’s leader, Macron, multiple times, that too publicly,” stories the Mirror US.
Another chimed in, “NATO doesn’t want to help Trump commit war crimes,” while a third commented, “Trump doesn’t understand what NATO is for. So shameful.”
Nevertheless, at least one supporter sided with the president, writing, “I agree. Do we want a country that has proven to be disloyal and even threatened to invade one of the other member states to remain as part of the Alliance?”
On April 12, Trump told Bartiromo, “We have to reexamine NATO because they weren’t there for us. And let me tell you something. For 25 years, they weren’t there for us. And they won’t be there for us. They’re weren’t there for us. This is another military operation. This is not a hard thing for us.
“We’re so a lot more highly effective. I rebuilt our army in my first time period. I’m utilizing it in my second time period. And now we have the best army anyplace in the world. And now, I used to be proper spending all that money on the army,” he concluded as Bartiromo nodded in agreement.
Trump’s remarks come after Vice President JD Vance failed to secure an agreement during peace negotiations between the United States and Iran in Pakistan throughout the two-week ceasefire.
Speaking to reporters on April 11, Vance said, “We’ve been at it now for 21 hours, and we have had a quantity of substantive discussions with the Iranians. That’s the great news. The dangerous news is that now we have not reached an settlement. And I believe that’s dangerous news for Iran, a lot more than it is dangerous news for the United States of America.
“The simple fact is, we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon,” Vance continued. “That is the core goal of the president of the United States, and that’s what we’ve tried to achieve through these negotiations.”
