Three people are dead, and at least three others have fallen sick after a suspected hantavirus outbreak wreaked havoc on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, the World Health Organization said on Sunday.

The WHO said the investigation is ongoing, but at least one case of hantavirus had been confirmed.

One of the sufferers is reportedly in intensive care in a South African hospital, the U.N.’s health company said, including that it was working with the authorities to evacuate two other passengers with symptoms from the ship.

Hantavirus infections are usually linked to publicity to the feces or urine of contaminated rodents, according to WHO.

WHO did not determine the vessel, but South African media is reporting that the outbreak occurred on the MV Hondius cruise ship as it sailed from Argentina to Cape Verde off the coast of West Africa.

The MarineTraffic global transport web site recognized the vessel as a Dutch-flagged passenger cruise ship.

The website says it is presently docked in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, as of Sunday evening.

It wasn’t immediately clear what would occur to the other passengers aboard the ship who did not seem to be contaminated by hantavirus.

What is hantavirus?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hantaviruses trigger two symptoms — those in the Western Hemisphere, including those discovered in the U.S., may cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). In the U.S., the most common instances of that are derived from deer mice.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is clinically comparable and is induced by hantaviruses discovered mainly in Europe and Asia. Seoul virus, however, a kind of hantavirus that causes HFRS, is discovered worldwide, including in the U.S.

People get hantaviruses mainly through contact with rodents, including rats and mice, particularly when uncovered to their urine, droppings or saliva. Bites and scratches from rodents can also infect somebody, but that’s uncommon.

What are the symptoms of hantavirus?

The symptoms of hantaviruses rely on which syndrome the virus causes in the contaminated particular person.

If the affected person contracts HPS, symptoms can start in one to eight weeks and embrace fatigue, fever and muscle aches, particularly in large muscle teams just like the thighs, hips, back and sometimes, the shoulders.

Around half of HPS sufferers expertise complications, dizziness, chills and stomach issues, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain.

Four to 10 days after the initial part of the sickness, the late symptoms of HPS can seem, which embrace coughing and shortness of breath, as properly as tightness of the chest as the lungs fill with fluid.

Around 38% of people who develop respiratory symptoms from HPS die from the disease.

If the affected person contracts HFRS, symptoms can develop within one to two weeks after publicity. In uncommon instances, they will take up to eight weeks to develop.

Initial symptoms embrace intense complications, back and stomach pain, fever and/or chills, nausea and blurred imaginative and prescient. Flushing of the face, inflammation or redness of the eyes and a rash are also attainable.

Later symptoms can embrace low blood pressure, lack of blood movement (acute shock), inner bleeding (vascular leakage) and acute kidney failure, which may trigger extreme fluid overload.

How extreme the symptoms are relies upon on the virus inflicting the infection. Hantaan and Dobrava virus infections normally trigger extreme symptoms, in which 5-15% of instances are deadly. Seoul, Saaremaa and Puumala virus infections are a lot more average, however, with a death charge of just 1%.

In any case, full recovery can take weeks or months.

Diagnosing hantavirus infections within 72 hours after publicity is almost not possible, but after 72 hours, repeat testing can normally detect the virus if it is current.

The CDC recommends avoiding contact with rodents and making certain they can not access dwelling or eating areas.
