U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to travel to Rome this week, reportedly to meet with Pope Leo XIV to mend relations between Washington and the Vatican.
Rubio is scheduled to be in Rome on Thursday and Friday, where he’ll reportedly meet with the Pope.
Reports indicated that he may meet the Vatican’s secretary of state, Pietro Parolin, and Antonio Tajani, Italy’s deputy prime minister and overseas minister.
The journey will coincide with the one-year anniversary of U.S.-born pontiff Pope Leo XIV. The pope is scheduled to go to Naples and Pompeii on Friday.
The Guardian reviews that Rubio requested an viewers with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, but the request reportedly hasn’t been granted.
News of Rubio’s journey was printed in a letter from the U.S. ambassador to Rome, Tilman Fertitta, addressed to the Italian authorities, according to reviews from the newspaper Corriere della Sera.
The paper said Rubio would meet Parolin on Thursday and Tajani on Friday. It reported that he would also meet the protection minister, Guido Crosetto; however, sources told the Guardian that an appointment has not yet been scheduled.

“Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy,” the president wrote in his post, including: “I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon.” He repeated that sentiment in feedback to reporters, saying: “We don’t like a pope who says it’s OK to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump penned in a pointed message at the pontiff in a post last month.
The president also turned his anger on Meloni – a Trump ally- after she called out his remarks against Leo.

“I find President Trump’s remarks about the Holy Father unacceptable,” Meloni said in a assertion on April 13. “The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, and it is right and proper that he call for peace and condemn all forms of war.”
That same day, during a papal flight to an 11-day tour of African international locations, Leo told reporters he was not a politician and that he didn’t need to enter into a debate with Trump.
“The message of the church, my message, the message of the gospel: blessed are the peacemakers. I do not look at my role as being political, a politician.” Leo said he didn’t suppose the message of the gospel ought to “be abused, as some are doing”.
