Fox News followers have been annoyed with United States Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent after he attributed the collapse of Spirit Airlines to Elizabeth Warren and the Biden administration.
During his phase on Fox News‘s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, the 63-year-old Trump appointee pointed to Democratic management under Joe Biden for blocking a merger years earlier, even as Donald Trump floated the likelihood of a authorities bailout for the beleaguered provider.
Viewers criticized the Treasury Secretary for deflecting accountability as gasoline costs surged during Trump’s escalating warfare with Iran.
“This is just more of the mess we inherited from the Biden administration,” Bessent acknowledged.
“In September 2022, Elizabeth Warren, who loves to write letters, sent a letter to the Justice Department and the Transport Department, saying that they should oppose the merger with Spirit Airlines. JetBlue wanted to buy them for $3.8 billion. It would have given them much more resiliency,” he added, citing a proposed merger that was blocked by the Department of Justice, which he claims is accountable for the airline’s demise.
The Treasury Secretary then went on to say, “She and the Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who is probably the worst Transportation Secretary in history, when it came to the office, they were against the merger. And if JetBlue had merged with Spirit, we would have all these jobs that were lost yesterday.”
Spirit Airlines halted all flights on Saturday, May 2, bringing an end to 34 years of service. The low-cost provider had confronted mounting financial pressures for years, submitting for chapter on a number of events, and pointed to hovering oil costs during Trump’s warfare with Iran as a key motive for ceasing operations, studies the Irish Star.
The president explored the likelihood of a authorities bailout, though no settlement was finalized. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy was quoted as saying, “We often times don’t have half a billion dollars laying around,” shortly before Spirit completely closed.
Fox News audiences criticized Bessent for inserting accountability on the Biden administration, with one X person commenting, “An additional $15 million a week in jet fuel cost is no reason to shut down an airline, but a letter from Elizabeth Warren that certainly is.”
Another viewer remarked, “Spirit Airlines had high operational cash burn before Elizabeth Warren’s letter, but sure another lie on god’s day,” while a third added, “For a smart guy, he sure comes up with some doozies; he really has no respect for the intelligence of the average person. And given we are suffering with this administration, I can see why.”
Others expressed frustration with remarks such as, “That blame is misplaced and ignorant. Mercer talks were ended 4 years ago. The death nail were jet fuel’s rising costs and related shortages due to the Iran war.”
Meanwhile, another Fox News viewer concluded, “This smug dumba– who is supposed to be a smart businessman is trying to convince us that one struggling company that hasn’t made money in 6 years, taking on huge debt to buy another company struggling even worse, would have resulted in a hugely successful company. Yeah, sure.”
