New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the Brooklyn anti-ICE protest that occurred over the weekend, clarifying that the NYPD didn’t work with federal brokers in the detention of a Nigerian migrant.

Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist who has shaped an sudden partnership with the NYPD, mentioned the scenario on Monday, refuting earlier claims that the police division had breached the town’s sanctuary insurance policies by aiding ICE brokers.

“First and foremost, I need to be very clear that there was no prior coordination or planning between the NYPD and ICE forward of this incident. NYPD officers weren’t dispatched to the hospital to take part or facilitate an ICE operation,” Mamdani said. “Rather, they were responding to 911 calls regarding a protest outside of the hospital.

“And as I’ve made very clear that our legal guidelines go away nothing, no room for interpretation about the fact that our NYPD won’t take part in civil immigration enforcement. And I’ve also been very clear about my views on ICE raids as a complete. I believe that they’re cruel. I believe that they’re inhumane. I believe that they don’t serve any curiosity of public security,” the mayor added.

A substantial crowd of demonstrators assembled outside Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn around 10 p.m. on Saturday following reports that an immigrant man had been apprehended and taken to the hospital.

Mamdani acknowledged viewing footage that appeared to depict an NYPD officer grabbing and forcefully throwing a demonstrator to the ground. The Democrat described the footage as “disturbing” and confirmed an inquiry would be initiated into the matter.

In a statement provided to The Express US, the NYPD asserted they simply responded to reports of unruly gatherings between Stanhope Street and Stockhold Street, a location within the 83rd Precinct’s jurisdiction.

When officers arrived on scene, the NYPD reported witnessing demonstrators behaving disruptively, “obstructing vehicular visitors, and blocking emergency entrances and exits at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.”

In total, authorities detained 9 people, with 8 facing charges including resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief. One person received a summons before being released.

“The NYPD doesn’t conduct or take part in civil immigration enforcement,” the NYPD said in a statement. “We had no prior awareness or coordination relating to the ICE operation that befell last night time.”

ICE arrests Nigerian man

In a statement provided to The Express US, the Department of Homeland Security identified the detainee as Chidozie Wilson Okeke, an undocumented Nigerian national with prior arrests for assault and criminal drug possession.

Okeke arrived in the U.S. on August 27, 2023, holding a tourist visa that mandated his departure by February 26, 2024. His arrest occurred on Saturday during a focused enforcement action in Brooklyn.

A DHS spokesperson stated that Okeke “refused to comply with officers’ lawful instructions to exit the vehicle and weaponized is vehicle to attempt to hit ICE officers. Okeke grew to become bodily combative trying to punch and elbow ICE officers. Our officers adopted their training and used the minimal quantity of power vital to make the arrest.”

DHS did not reveal why Okeke required medical attention. The department noted that he “remained non-compliant” throughout his medical assessment, “throwing himself to the ground and screaming.
