Claire Nielson, the Scottish actress who starred in a basic episode of the hit comedy show Fawlty Towers, has died at the age of 89. The star appeared alongside comedy legends John Cleese and Prunella Scales in the enduring BBC sequence. She performed Mrs Hamilton, a glamorous visitor who arrives at the chaotic Torquay resort with her American husband in The Waldorf Salad episode, from the second sequence. She later said her agent had been livid that she had taken the half, worrying it could smash her profession.
However it went on to grow to be a fan favorite episode in which the husband clashes with Basil Fawlty over a Waldorf salad – hence the title. the episode ends with a livid Basil throwing all the company out of his resort. Claire was already a nicely established star with a two decade profession behind her when she shot the episode which aired in 1979.
