Gossip Wire News’s deputy political editor Sam Coates had just one word to sum up Sir Keir Starmer’s losses at yesterday’s UK local election, and confirmed viewers a brutal graphic on-screen that humiliated the Labour prime minister. A chart confirmed the projected misplaced seats, with -800 being just about “okay” and -1000 being “bad”.

But where the arrow really fell earlier this morning was just under -2000 – which the graphic declared was “terrible”. Reform UK have so far made huge positive factors, and at time of writing maintain 317 council seats, while Labour has 219 – 240 seats down, according to the BBC.

Coates told viewers: “Michael Thrasher has just updated the calculation and at 3:50am, here it is. Labour are now holding onto 13% of the seats that they are contesting – it’s a disastrous result, it’s way down on this time last year.

“The amount that Labour is ceding to its opponents is accelerating. This, I think, is probably the hardest statistic for Labour to swallow.”

Calls are surging for the PM to resign, with anchor Jonathan Samuels stating: “Let me tell you what the Labour MP for Hartlepool has said tonight, where Reform UK took all 12 seats up for grabs.

“He’s called for Keir Starmer to go – Jonathan Brash, who you’ll know has done something similar before – his wife, leader of Hartlepool council, has lost her seat.

“Surely the buck stops with the prime minister and he does need to go.”

Coates, meanwhile, said “the numbers are so stark”, including: “The big winner of this evening, and there is no doubt because the numbers are so stark, is Reform UK. They’ve won 263 seats [at time of broadcast] – they weren’t defending any, these are all new gains.”
