Social media customers accused Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday of “punishing” Democratic state leaders by deferring healthcare reimbursements for their residents under the guise of investigating fraudsters who he claims are siphoning hundreds of thousands from federal health packages.
During a White House event, Vance announced a $1.3 billion deferral in Medicaid funding to California, a state ruled by Gavin Newsom, an outspoken critic of the Trump administration who is believed to be eyeing the 2028 presidential ticket.
Himself a potential 2028 hopeful, Vance claimed that his work at the helm of the newly created anti-fraud job power seeks to claw back taxpayer {dollars} for struggling Americans. But many skeptics say the power is merely another mechanism with which to inflict punishment against President Donald Trump‘s political enemies and their constituents.
“They’re killing people to punish Governors they don’t like,” one X consumer wrote in reply to a video of Vance’s announcement Wednesday. “That’s what they’re doing.”
“For them, it’s all about inflicting pain,” another consumer said.

The Republican administration is also imposing a six-month freeze on some new Medicare enrollments and warning states to examine Medicaid fraud or risk dropping funding, officers said.
The strikes are half of Vance’s obvious directive to take more aggressive steps to examine states before the November elections. The panel set up by Trump seeks to crack down on potential misuse of public money, The Associated Press reported.
Vance has promoted the duty power’s work during marketing campaign stops for Republican candidates and is predicted to focus on the hassle Thursday in Maine, which has intently watched major races scheduled for June 9.
The steps come as people across the United States have raised considerations about rising health prices and limitations to access, sometimes from the federal authorities’s own actions. New work necessities in Medicaid, for instance, are anticipated to pressure hospitals around the nation and consequence in hundreds of thousands of enrollees dropping their health coverage.
The administration contends its vigorous fraud-busting efforts will help stop wrongdoing in Medicaid and Medicare while preserving funding and assets for those most in need.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, a tv persona who leads the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said the administration was making the “largest deferral we’ve ever made” in Medicaid funds and that it was justified.
He claimed the administration had recognized questionable expenditures and anomalies, such as a greater charge of growth in California’s home care program in contrast with other states. He didn’t present concrete examples of documented fraud.
“We’d like the state to at least come to the table and explain to us how these outlier payments have been generated,” he said.
Newsom’s press workplace disputed Oz’s claims and said the state’s home care program grew because the state is “keeping more people OUT of far more expensive nursing homes.”
“We hate fraud,” the workplace wrote on X. “But that’s NOT what this is.”
The complete value of California’s Medicaid program, including state and federal funding, is predicted to be about $222 billion for the price range 12 months that begins July 1.
Several alleged fraud schemes have been prosecuted in the hospice and home healthcare classes, and states have acknowledged that it’s a official concern.
