‘Addictive’ British series with 100% rating back on | UK News
After a profitable debut series, Rivals is back with its second outing, set for release tomorrow.
Rivals is a British period comedy–drama tv series tailored from Jilly Cooper’s 1988 novel. Its starry ensemble forged contains David Tennant, Aidan Turner, Katherine Parkinson, Victoria Smurfit, Alex Hassell, Nafessa Williams, Bella Maclean, Emily Atack, and Danny Dyer.
In the lead-up to Rival’s official release, the critics have been singing its praises, and it has already amassed a good 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The synopsis for the second series reads: “In 1980s England, a rivalry between two powerful men finally comes to a head.” One critic wrote: “This is glossy, wickedly funny, politically incorrect and completely unashamed. When it comes to old-school escapist TV, Rivals is unrivalled.”
Another said: “It is tender and well-observed about relationships when it needs to be.”
“Rivals’ second season delivers in spades, turning everything we loved about its first outing up to eleven and adding in even more complex character dynamics and relationship arcs,” added a third.
A fourth said: “Rivals looks and feels fabulously retro. The soundtrack touts the earworms of Sade, David Bowie and surprising Blue. The wardrobe, buffeted hair and certain set designs look purposefully tacky.”
Ed Power of the Daily Telegraph said: “We are in the realms of melodrama here, something like a Mexican telenovela meets a po-faced BBC period drama with Yazoo in charge of costume design.”
“This is trashy TV for grownups, but it is much smarter than it meets the eye. It doesn’t just peel back the truth of these characters, but it also examines the 1980s in all its deplorable hedonism,” added a critic.
Therese Lacson of Collider said: “It’s far more than just a guilty pleasure; Rivals Season 2 surpasses Season 1 on nearly every front, proving that more time and space to breathe is exactly what a show needs to mature into a resounding win.”
Rivals series one is streaming now on Disney+, with series two arriving on Friday, May 15.
