An ultra-rare classic car left gathering mud in a barn for 40 years has offered for $83,505.63.
A 1934 ‘Crossley Streamline’ car – one of only two in existence – was unearthed in a barn in Cambridgeshire.
Despite its battered condition and lack of two wheels, the beautiful motor sparked a global bidding warfare when it went under the hammer.
It ultimately offered for $83,505.63 at online auctioneers Humbert & Ellis Ltd.
Auctioneer Jonathan Humbert said, “This car has attracted worldwide curiosity for sheer rarity worth.
“There is something of the airship of this car being a teardrop design and over 18 feet long.”
Bids opened at $673.43, but quickly rose with more than 100 bids from eight worldwide consumers.

Humbert added, “It just goes to show the perennial worth people put in rare and historic vehicles.
“The end of the time online public sale was notably thrilling as every time someone put another bid on, the lot prolonged by 5 minutes.
“We kept thinking that the car was about to sell for a certain price and then another bid comes out of nowhere, and the price goes up – it was pure excitement.”

The Crossley Streamline – full with authentic reg plate ANB 487 – was a classic idea car designed by Sir Denniston Burney, who helped design the R100 airship.
The only other recognized survivor is owned by Lord Montague of Beaulieu.
It was one of a assortment of seven rare pre-war vehicles found in the barn, which had been collected over many many years.
