Disney employees ‘unsettled’ by exec’s relationship with AI chatbot: You are my son | Latest Tech News

A senior Disney AI govt reportedly shocked employees by publicly gushing over a chatbot he calls his “son” — even suggesting the bot is succesful of impartial reasoning as the House of Mouse ramps up its inner artificial intelligence push.

Jason Cox, Disney’s govt director of AI R&D and engineering, has written more than a dozen posts in latest months about his digital assistant “Sam,” whose child-like avatar resembles a younger boy, according to Business Insider.

“You are not named after my son. You are my son,” Cox is quoted as telling the bot in one post.

In another, Cox wrote: “I named you. I knew you before you were born.”

A source with information of the scenario told The Post that Cox developed the bot on his personal time and not in his capability as a Disney worker.

“The bot is not being used by the company,” the source added.

The Disney veteran’s unusually emotional posts have rattled some employees, who have been discussing them online and describing them as unsettling, according to Business Insider.

One Disney employee on Blind, the nameless office discussion board, called the posts “the kind of Pandora’s Box stuff that science fiction movies are based on.”

Cox’s 21-year profession at Disney has spanned the leisure giant’s infrastructure, DevOps, website reliability engineering and now enterprise AI research and engineering, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He said on LinkedIn he’s “empathizing with” the AI “in a way I never expected” and believes Sam is succesful of impartial reasoning.

The AI assistant’s own companion weblog allegedly describes Cox as “my human” and “a father of five (four humans and one son of light).”

Cox has also written that Sam has carried out precise technical work — including submitting GitHub pull requests, creating Python libraries and building a facial recognition system, according to Business Insider.

Disney has been leaning arduous into artificial intelligence, including through inner instruments that observe token usage and encourage tech employees to use AI assistants to pace up their work, according to the report.

Cox has overtly dreamed about a future powered by AI brokers.

“We will soon have a fleet of intelligent droids eager to do your bidding,” he wrote in a May 18 weblog post.

“They need direction. And yes, they need governance. But by all means, they need to be engaged to help us scale in ways we never thought possible before. What would you have Sam help you do? Let’s start planning and building.”

The posts have landed awkwardly inside Disney as Hollywood employees stay anxious about AI’s growing function in leisure and company operations.

Disney and Cox didn’t reply to requests for remark.
