Rare blue moon seen over San Francisco in stunning…

Blue moon, you noticed me staring alone.

Californians had been handled to a celestial spectacle this weekend as a uncommon blue moon rose dramatically over the Golden State, portray the sky in mesmerizing orange hues.

A wide ranging time-lapse captured by many moon gazers, including Shreenivasan Manievannan on Instagram, exhibits the moon climbing above San Francisco’s Bay Area between Saturday night, May 30, and Sunday morning, May 31.

But despite its identify, the blue moon wasn’t truly blue. The time period refers to the second full moon in a single calendar month — a comparatively unusual event that happens roughly every two and a half to three years.

This specific blue moon also occurred to be a micromoon, showing barely smaller and dimmer because it occurred close to the Moon’s farthest level from Earth, or apogee.

The moon reached peak illumination at roughly 1:45 a.m. PDT on May 31, completely framed against San Francisco’s glittering skyline.

The time-lapse compresses the moon’s journey, from its dramatic emergence over the horizon to its slow ascent, charming viewers across social media and local astronomy communities.

This was the only blue moon of 2026. The first full moon of May, identified as the flower moon, occurred on May 1, making the second one on May 31 qualify as “blue.”

Clear skies and gentle late-May climate across Northern California gave many the possibility to witness the show in particular person, with some becoming a member of organized moonrise viewing occasions and boat tours on the Bay.
