Is the Message of hostility the Rich Getting Louder? | Political News

When Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders got here on the national scene, he unabashedly described himself as a Democratic Socialist. On some stage, you had to admire his honesty; he wasn’t making an attempt to conceal who he was — the scary half was that he wasn’t making an attempt to conceal who he was. At the time, it was a shock to many. In 2026, Bernie Sanders now finds himself one among many. While many Americans, when requested, would possibly say we’re divided by race or gender, a new ballot says the real divide is one thing different. Is Bernie’s class envy resonating with more people?

According to a new NBC News ballot, the good news is that, weeks away from America’s 250th birthday, most Americans are feeling that we’re more united than divided, particularly along conventional traces of race and gender. While 54 % of those polled said they imagine that most Americans share the same core values, 44 % said they assume most Americans have inherently different values.

While the conventional divides are still there, another one is rising: the rich versus the non-wealthy. Granted, class envy is definitely nothing new, and the opinions of it are all over the map. A 30-year-old man who said he’s a Democrat said, “We live in completely different worlds.” A 47-year-old woman who said she is an independent stated that the rich “don’t have empathy right now because they’re not suffering how other people are suffering.”

But here is where the answers get a bit interesting. A 56-year-old man who claimed he was a Republican said, “There is a huge divide. But you know, everybody’s still Americans. We all have the same rights. We all have the same opportunities.” A 36-year-old man was brutally trustworthy but noticed commonalities between haves and have-nots, saying:

“I’m far from wealthy, but there’s no difference between me and the guy that owns the company that I work for. I have the same work ethic; he just had better opportunities, and he took them. When I had those opportunities, I didn’t take them.”

The ballot requested respondents about wealth and energy. Of those polled, 82 % said that “ordinary Americans,” regardless of politics, had more in common with one another than with those they see as having a lot of energy. Respondents also said they imagine there may be a two-tier justice system, with 86 % saying rich people can often pay their method out of penalties. When requested about how to repair the divide, the solutions have been about what you would possibly count on. The 30-year-old Democrat said, “Tax people, billionaires at the very least.” One Republican suggested fixing the public education system, and another Republican stated, “You just can’t expect the government to fix that.”

So, is all of this evidence that the fixed drumbeat of “hate the rich” from the traditional suspects like Bernie Sanders and AOC, plus some new ones like Maine Democrat Senate candidate Graham Platner, is getting louder and being heard? At a time when many Americans are struggling economically, Platner just lately threw gasoline on the fire with his ridiculous tweet about Elon Musk, posting on X, “Elon Musk just became the world’s first trillionaire. Let’s make sure he’s also the last.” Combine that with the quantity of Democratic Socialists being nominated and elected by the Democratic Party, who will echo Platner’s and others’ “hate the rich” cries, and the reply sure seems prefer it’s a yes.

It’s a message that more Americans are paying consideration to, and Republicans would do properly to listen before November to those Americans.
