“I’ve never seen something like that. He made that putt at six, and there was comparatively little cheering. When he missed the putt at 17, there have been cheers.”

He continued: “To give you the option to put that out of your head when you are making an attempt to win a U.S. Open, you are making an attempt to control your nerves, and to strive to put that out of your head, I’ve never seen anyone have to deal with that ingredient in a major championship to the extent that I noticed Wyndham have to deal with it today.”

Clark handled the hostile reception with composure. During his press conference, he remarked: “Man, they undoubtedly did not need me to win. It’s fairly uncommon in an Open championship or a major to have followers variety of boo against your photographs or cheer for dangerous photographs.

“That was tough, but sometimes being the underdog is nice. I was in ’23, and I kind of did the same thing. Anytime someone said something negative to me, I replaced it with something positive.
