The 51-year-old ABC anchor devoted a portion of the night news broadcast to honoring the cherished Hollywood icon, whose passing at age 78 was confirmed on Monday. Sam’s passing was confirmed in an official statement published on his Instagram page, which read: “It is with immense disappointment that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday thirteenth July, in Sydney Australia.”
While his cause of death has not been disclosed, the statement confirmed that Sam had “remained cancer free.” The beloved actor had waged a five-year battle against stage-three blood cancer, before announcing in April that he had beaten the disease following a groundbreaking new treatment after chemotherapy proved unsuccessful.
The Instagram statement continued, “Sam was surrounded by household and handed with the dignity that has characterised his complete life. The loss was sudden and surprising but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.
“They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care. More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”
