BBC Breakfast was paused for a heartbreaking update just minutes into the programme. Jon Kay and Sally Nugent returned to the purple couch on Monday (July 27), delivering the day’s top news tales with viewers.

This included the tragic news that two people have been killed and a number of more injured in a taking pictures at Seattle’s annual food pageant, Bite of Seattle

“Two people have been killed and at least five more have been injured after a shooting at a food festival in Seattle. Among the injured is a two-year-old boy after gun shots were heard at the Seattle centre at around six o’clock local time last night,” Jon said.

“The city’s mayor says one person has been taken into custody.”

Assistant chief of Seattle Police, Tyrone Davis, has since confirmed that the taking pictures has brought on three fatalities.

Two victims died at the scene, while a third sufferer has since died from their accidents after being taken to Harborview Medical Center.

Among those hospitalised are a two-year-old boy, a 39-year-old girl, and a 23-year-old man, all of whom are in “stable condition”.

Seattle City Mayor Katie Wilson announced that one suspect, whose identification has not been disclosed, has been detained. Police later confirmed that they had launched a search for a second suspect.

Moments after the news was shared on BBC Breakfast, Jon introduced viewers another heartbreaking announcement.

He said that 4 people, including a child, have been killed in a car crash in Derby.

“Four people, including a baby girl, have died following a collision off a dual carriageway in Derby on Saturday night,” the presenter said. “Derbyshire police said the car left the A38 and crashed into trees around 11 o’clock in the evening.

“The driver, a 33-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of inflicting death by harmful driving.”

Derbyshire Police said two women, aged 18 and 30, and a 36-year-old man and were declared dead at the scene.

The baby girl was taken to hospital, but pronounced dead shortly after.
