Actor Shruti Haasan has approached the Bombay High Court searching for safety of her persona and publicity rights, alleging widespread misuse of her identification through AI-generated content, deepfake videos, faux endorsements and unauthorised merchandise.
The industrial swimsuit names a number of Indian and worldwide entities, social media platforms and unidentified people, generally referred to as John Doe defendants, for allegedly facilitating or internet hosting content that infringes her rights.
Justice Abhay Ahuja has granted Haasan go away under Clause XII of the Letters Patent to institute the industrial swimsuit. According to the plea, “The entities are using AI and deepfake technology by morphing/superimposing Haasan’s face to create distasteful and inappropriately explicit videos and images.”
Haasan has sought an injunction restraining the unauthorised use of her identification and persona attributes, arguing that such content violates her persona, publicity and ethical rights.
Social media platforms and companies named in the swimsuit
Among the defendants is Mahalaxmi Arts and Craft Works, which is accused of promoting posters that includes Haasan’s title and image on Flipkart without authorisation.
The swimsuit also names a number of celeb reserving and endorsement platforms, fashion and jewelry companies, along with major social media corporations, including Google-owned YouTube, Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, X Corp and Pinterest.
Haasan has alleged that these platforms host or facilitate content that infringes her rights and has sought instructions for the elimination of such materials.
Actor seeks everlasting injunction and damages
The swimsuit states that through her work across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English cinema, as properly as music and model endorsements, Shruti Haasan’s title has acquired important industrial worth and distinctiveness.
