The Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to rescind the rule that bars local broadcast station house owners from reaching more than 39% of the entire quantity of US TV households in a transfer that may help spark more industry consolidation.
The FCC voted 2-1 to elevate the cap in favor of a new case-by-case strategy. The commission’s sole Democrat, Anna Gomez, said the proposal was unlawful and argued only Congress can elevate the cap. Many critics argue the transfer will lead to extreme market energy among station house owners.
