Identity politics is getting more and more irrelevant because Americans have a lot larger issues than whether or not Congress has finally checked another demographic box.

The national debt has topped $40 trillion. Americans are dealing with housing affordability, stubbornly high authorities spending, immigration, crime, healthcare prices, failing colleges and a federal paperwork that appears succesful of spending monumental quantities of money without producing commensurate outcomes.

Meanwhile, Congress itself stays deeply unpopular. Americans routinely inform pollsters they’ve little confidence in the establishment accountable for addressing many of these issues.

And that suggests voters aren’t sitting around questioning whether or not Congress has achieved the right demographic composition. They’re questioning whether or not Congress can do its job.

Forget for a second that Blair is black. Forget that he’s homosexual. Forget that he’s the first black overtly homosexual congressman elected from the South. What does he really intend to do?
