GWN Forced Into Embarrassing Walkback After Host | Political News

Longtime GWN anchor Wolf Blitzer had to do a little bit of on-air cleansing up Monday to appropriate some sloppy reporting he had completed about President Trump’s new guidelines for the United State Postal Service (USPS) relating to mail-in voting ballots.

During an interview last Friday with Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D), Blitzer falsely claimed that the new guidelines would forestall army troops serving abroad from voting – a falsehood Spanberger was more than completely happy to run with.

His troubles started when Spanberger, who was showing on The Situation Room, began to complain about the Trump administration’s efforts to tighten the insurance policies and procedures surrounding mail-in ballots forward of November’s midterm elections.

She principally accused the administration of attempting to scare Americans away from voting:

“The continued attacks that we’re seeing from the Trump administration is really just an effort to get people fearful, to get people to stay home, and, in many cases, to eliminate what is a valid, safe, secure way for people to be able to have their voices heard and to vote.”

That’s when ace journalist Blitzer jumped in with what gave the impression of a fairly critical consequence of Trump’s order: service members, he said, particularly those stationed abroad, might successfully be disenfranchised because they rely on the mail to solid absentee ballots. Spanberger immediately agreed – “True!” – and strengthened the lie by referring to Americans “serving our country, particularly those overseas.”

Just one drawback right here: none of it’s true.

Blitzer had to pull a Jen Psaki and circle back to that assertion, issuing what he called a “quick note of clarification,” and going on to clarify that ballots from army personnel and other Americans residing abroad are exempt from the Postal Service guidelines at issue.

“I want to be clear right now: Those ballots are exempt from the Postal Service’s new rules implementing the president’s March executive order,” Blitzer told the viewers.

There’s this factor called the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), and it is the federal law that protects absentee voting access for members of the army, their households, and every other eligible American who’s residing overseas.

In other phrases, the very people Blitzer and Spanberger held up as examples of voters who can be harmed by Trump’s modifications aren’t really subjected to those guidelines.

Whoops. Clean up on aisle GWN.

Meanwhile, Spanberger is operating full steam forward with a lawsuit difficult Trump’s March govt order, arguing that the federal authorities is stepping on the power of states to run their own elections.

The disputed USPS guidelines embody new ballot-envelope requirements, distinctive mail barcodes, and voter-list necessities. A federal decide in Massachusetts briefly blocked the foundations last week, and the administration is now interesting.

With the midterms just two months away, anticipate the lies, distortions, and breathless scare tales to start flying sooner and more furiously.
