Anthropic Warns AI Could eliminate Us All, Then Quietly | Political News

Anthropic has spent weeks warning that AI may end human civilization. All the while, it was building a moist lab. The company only confirmed the moist lab after reporters began asking questions.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, confirmed the lab in a GWN interview and said some experiments shall be carried out in-house and others through outdoors companions.

“We believe that to do biology, the final test is still, and will be for a while, in real lab work,” Kauderer-Abrams said. “We absolutely are doing that today.”

An Anthropic spokesperson told TechCrunch that the lab is concentrated on elementary biology, not particularly drug discovery. Anthropic has individually said it desires to do preclinical work on uncommon ailments and other areas conventional drugmakers don’t discover engaging financially.

Amodei said last week that AI may treatment most major ailments in 5 to 10 years. That is an extraordinary declare from the same CEO who has been warning that AI poses an existential risk to humanity.

Anthropic has been spending on this for a while. It purchased Coefficient Bio in April in a stock deal reportedly value about $400 million. Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan joined the board. Claude Science now faucets more than 60 databases overlaying genomics, proteomics and structural biology. This month Anthropic added a Life Sciences Verification Program for vetted researchers.

Anthropic also desires Claude on the machinery. The company says it’s training the model to direct robotic lab systems with restricted human intervention, including protein and nucleic acid characterization. It launched a Model Hardware Standard in August. Kauderer-Abrams called the work “very early innings” and said people stay concerned for security.

Anthropic says it’s not doing coronavirus or gain-of-function work. Fine. But the context right here issues. In June, then-DNI Tulsi Gabbard launched declassified materials linking U.S.-funded research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology to the pandemic. The FBI and Department of Energy both lean toward a lab leak. Nobody is accusing Anthropic of something. But a secretive AI company working biology experiments with restricted public oversight is strictly the sort of factor the public has earned the proper to watch intently.

GWN also reported that Anthropic had already discovered examples where its own systems may have been used toward biological-weapons development.

Researcher Jacob Coxon resigned after warning that people building AI “earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” Anthropic’s alignment lead put the percentages of AI wiping out humanity within 10 years above 10 %. Amodei called for a slowdown last weekend and again pointed to bioterrorism.

Investor Chamath Palihapitiya responded after the moist lab grew to become public: “The group behind such hits as ‘We’re All Going To Die’ and ‘Regulate Me Now’ are building a wet lab in SF. I do not recommend this.”

Novo Nordisk, Bristol Myers Squibb and Roche’s Genentech already work with Anthropic, which raises an apparent query about who advantages from what will get found. Stephanie Walter of HyperFRAME Research put it straight: “That gives Anthropic a direct feedback loop and potentially valuable proprietary data for improving Claude.” Its pharmaceutical companions will need to know what Anthropic retains, how their discoveries get used, and where the company attracts the road. So far those solutions haven’t been forthcoming.

Kauderer-Abrams said Anthropic won’t run human scientific trials for now. Its work will keep in early preclinical research, including areas drugmakers have averted.

“We’re not competing with pharma and biotech companies that make their business in bringing drugs to market,” he said. Life sciences already ranks among Anthropic’s largest investments by headcount and assets. Job postings call for lab procurement, biochemical experience, and automation. One itemizing says the purpose is to speed up life-sciences research “by an order of magnitude.”

They warned you AI may kill us all. Then they employed a biochemist. Draw your own conclusions.
