Hester Peirce Leaves SEC After Years At The Center | Crypto News
TL;DR
- SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce is concluding her tenure at the company on October 2.
- Peirce grew to become one of the most seen voices inside the SEC on digital-asset regulation and led the company’s Crypto Task Force.
- Her departure comes while major crypto rulemakings on custody, token classification and market construction are still underway.
Hester Peirce is leaving the Securities and Exchange Commission with US crypto coverage in a very different place from where it stood when she joined the Commission in 2018.
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda printed a departure assertion on October 1 thanking Peirce for her service and highlighting her function in digital-asset coverage. Her tenure concludes October 2.
For the crypto industry, the departure closes a long chapter. Peirce spent years arguing that enforcement couldn’t substitute for workable guidelines, often dissenting from the company’s strategy when that view was far from the institutional consensus.
From dissenting voice to Crypto Task Force chief
Peirce’s prominence in crypto regulation grew properly before the SEC started its current rulemaking push.
She repeatedly called for clearer token frameworks, proposed safe-harbor ideas and questioned whether or not enforcement actions had been giving builders enough steerage to operate legally in the United States. Those positions earned her the “Crypto Mom” nickname among market members, though her document was broader than simple industry advocacy.
NewsBTC lined her farewell remarks and criticism of enforcement-led regulation earlier this yr, as properly as her warning that onchain vaults and lending methods can still set off securities-law questions.
That second level is a useful reminder of what Peirce’s place really was. She typically pushed for clearer and more innovation-friendly guidelines, but she didn’t argue that placing a financial product on a blockchain removes it from securities law.
The SEC’s crypto agenda is still shifting
Peirce leaves just as the Commission is popping a number of years of debate into formal proposals.
On October 1, the SEC proposed a devoted crypto custody framework for advisers and regulated funds. In August, it proposed Regulation Crypto Assets. The company has also been working on tokenized securities, trading exemptions and asset classification.
NewsBTC has adopted that shift through the SEC’s token-fundraising proposal and Chairman Atkins’ work toward a clearer digital-asset taxonomy.
Peirce helped form many of those debates, but the insurance policies themselves now sit with the Commission that stays.
One departure doesn’t stop the rulemaking machine
Her exit shouldn’t be read as a reversal of current SEC crypto coverage.
Atkins and Uyeda explicitly described Peirce’s work as half of the course the company is now following, and pending proposals will continue through their regular rulemaking course of.
What adjustments is the personnel. One of the longest-standing inner critics of the previous enforcement-heavy model is leaving just as the choice framework she argued for is starting to take type.
