The 2026 WNBA Finals Show – in a Nutshell

The 2026 WNBA Finals start this Saturday (October 17), with the Golden State Valkyries in their second 12 months of existence internet hosting the Atlanta Dream.

The Valkyries shouldn’t have a roster of superstars. In fact, they don’t have a famous person family title period on their roster. Instead, they’re led by gamers such as Veronica Burton and Kayla Thornton, each of whom is an unapologetic and outspoken Christian. Golden State performs tenacious workforce protection and, when it has the ball, focuses on working precise performs to create open pictures and penetrate the lane. The Dream is nominally led by Angel Reese, president of the Angel Reese Fan Club and always a prepared source of blustery statements about how oppressed and discriminated against she is. On the court, Reese is a expert defender, albeit no Atlanta fan’s first alternative to have the ball in her fingers when their workforce wants to rating. Still, she’s better than she used to be, as she is going to probably be glad to let you know.

The Valkyries’ home video games will probably be performed, as has been the case since the franchise began in 2025, at Chase Center in San Francisco, home of the Golden State Warriors. The enviornment’s seating capability for basketball is eighteen,064. Every seat will probably be offered, as has been the case for every Valkyries home recreation throughout the franchise’s transient tenure. Chase Center will probably be packed and pumped as the Valkyries take pleasure in fervent fan assist, turning the place into what the workforce’s supporters affectionately call Ballhalla, where Violet (the workforce’s bookish-trying mascot) and company take pleasure in a large home benefit.

The demographics of Valkyries’ supporters defy the standard cliches of WNBA followers. For one, they’re followers. Second, they arrive in all shapes and sizes. My day job is at a sporting items store that, in addition to exercise and aggressive video games gear, sells a good-sized quantity of local workforce attire, which has led to many genuinely pleasant exchanges between myself and prospects buying for their workforce and participant of alternative. A current instance featured my monitoring down a Kaitlyn Chen jersey for the sweetest senior citizen conceivable, who was past excited to attend her first Valkyries recreation the next day with her church group. I’ve also observed, with a certain quantity of amusement, a regular stream of sad-trying husbands being marched proper past the store’s large shows of 49ers merchandise by their wives, who with steely eye and decided gait are heading immediately toward the Valkyries space.

The Dream’s home court is much more, shall we embrace, intimate. And reflective of how, despite relentless promotion, the WNBA only works when it provides integration with the group over demanding worship of people. Starting in 2021, Atlanta’s home court has been Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia, with a seating capability of 3,500. The workforce will transfer to State Farm Arena in Atlanta correct, home of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, with a basketball seating capability of 17,608, next 12 months. The Dream has already performed a few video games at State Farm Arena, including its two common-season matchups this 12 months with Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, as effectively as its three 2026 postseason video games performed thus far. The average attendance for the two common-season home video games against the Fever, with each workforce successful once, was 17,044. The average attendance at the three Atlanta home playoff video games this 12 months, one against the Washington Mystics and two against the New York Liberty, was 9,695.

One would count on attendance to increase for the Finals. Problem is, it might not have the prospect. The Dream can’t play any of its three doable home video games at State Farm Arena because it has long been booked for the nights in query, once for a live performance and twice for Hawks common-season video games. Thus, the WNBA is confronted with the prospect of making an attempt to persuade the populace that it’s a league on the ascent, which it may do by utilizing the Valkyries as an instance, when one of the 2 groups competing for the championship is compelled to play its video games in an enviornment dwarfed by not a few high faculty gymnasiums.

The WNBA being its own worst enemy is hardly a current development. From its patented incapability to market its stars unless they’re a particular demographic, to going silent when vile accusations of racism are made, the league is a grasp class on how not to do business. People accuse the NFL of persevering with to pander to the woke mob with its ongoing embrace of low cost sloganeering. Still, in contrast to the WNBA, it’s a model of stage-headed social neutrality. The league would probably want the Dream win the Finals so it may ship Angel Reese on a lapdog media victory tour. For myself, I’m unashamedly pulling for the Valkyries. It’d be good to see an precise workforce win and end off this self-inflicted prepare wreck of a season on a constructive word.
