ABC axes fan favorite show after renewing all | TV Shows
ABC has officially renewed all of its scripted programming for new seasons, except for one.
Fans were quick to notice the absence of The Rookie: Feds from the network’s list of returning series and expressed disappointment over its cancellation.
Returning shows include 9-1-1 (Season 8), Abbott Elementary (Season 5), Grey’s Anatomy (season 22), High Potential (Season 2), Shifting Gears (Season 2), The Rookie (Season 8), and Will Trent (Season 4).
But The Rookie: Feds, a spin-off of The Rookie, did not make the cut. The show was canceled in November 2023 after just one season, following a lengthy production delay caused by the WGA and SAG strikes.
At the time, Deadline pointed to the strikes as the key factor behind the decision. However, co-creator Alexi Hawley says it was more complex than that.
Nash-Betts went on to win a Primetime Emmy for her work in Monster just two months after the cancellation. Some fans now say the network gave up something valuable.
“i’m mad Niecy Nash’s show The Rookie: Feds got canceled after only one season,” one viewer posted.
Another wrote: “the rookie feds had so much potential, unluckily simone is lowkey annoying, they tried to make her as john nolan-y as possible but only white men can afford to be annoying a–holes.”
A third fan added: “I want rookie Feds back like stop canceling the good shows.”
Despite fan efforts and critical praise for Nash-Betts, the show remains off the schedule while its parent series continues into an eighth season.
