Akshay Bhatia’s quest for the $4 million Arnold Palmer prize carried deeper significance than financial reward; he sought to pay tribute to a deceased member of the family.
Bhatia secured his third PGA Tour triumph on Sunday, capturing his maiden signature event victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill after defeating Daniel Berger in a playoff on the par-four 18th gap.
The 24-year-old recorded 4 bogeys in the ultimate spherical, but a essential eagle on gap 16 propelled the golfer toward the championship, concluding at 15-under as he navigated the emotional problem of grief, acknowledging he performed ‘indignant’ during a number of holes on the back 9. It comes after a PGA Tour star withdrew from the tournaments minutes before his tee time.
“Yeah, it’s amazing,” Bhatia remarked following his victory. “Obviously being a part of Mastercard is really cool. So to win this event, to win for Mr. Palmer, for what he’s done for this community, for this tournament.
“Everyone is aware of when you show up to Bay Hill it is going to be a take a look at and to play one of the toughest golf programs. And to succeed is admittedly cool, and I am unable to thank the event enough, cannot thank Callaway enough. And my niece handed away in December, and so I knew she was wanting over me this yr and I made this win for her, for sure.”

He elaborated on the eagle shot after Bhatia also averaged 109 feet and three inches of successful putts throughout the competition.
“Yeah, that’s half of it,” Bhatia stated regarding his putting performance following the round. “Winning golf tournaments, there’s a lot of luck concerned. Quite a bit of issues have to go your method. It’s just half of the sport. But, yeah, I imply I just, I did a lot of great issues this week. I had my niece watching over me, who handed away in December. And I noticed, when I noticed that rainbow on 18, it jogged my memory of her. So it was actually cool, you recognize, just a particular second for us and cannot wait to rejoice.”
Beyond having a powerful personal motivation to succeed, Bhatia’s third bogey of the tournament on the par-four ninth hole triggered an emotional whirlwind.
“Yeah, I told Joe, I used to be like, we shot 4-under yesterday on this aspect, and I used to be like, let’s just attempt and do it,” Bhatia reflected following the final round. “I missed that putt on 9, that was just a lack of focus. And then I just had, I performed with some anger for those couple holes.
“That putt on 11 was a huge bonus for me. That really switched my momentum. Up-and-down on 12. And then, yeah, I just hit it great — and the shot on 16, Joe said, Try to hit the best 6-iron of your life, and I did. So, yeah, it was really cool. Daniel played amazing. This game is so crazy, it’s been crazy for these last couple weeks, watching Bridgeman win and then watching Nico win, and so you just never know what can happen in this game.”
Bhatia revealed his niece had been recognized with a uncommon condition and tragically died on his marriage ceremony day.
“Yeah, so her a name is Mia,” Bhatia shared emotionally. “She was diagnosed with a pretty rare disease. And, you know, she was a fighter for a long time. She wasn’t supposed to make it past a year old. You know, the coolest thing about it was she was there at our wedding, which was really hard for her to travel. And it was the day of our wedding she passed away, she didn’t make it.
“We tried, clearly tried every part, and had a great help system. But there’s so many cool issues about that week. She stayed in a home where we received married, it was called Heaven on Earth. She beloved the sand. She received to see everybody.”
