American Idol viewership slips as luxury location | TV Shows

American Idol’s trip to paradise wasn’t enough to keep viewers tuned in as ratings dipped by more than 700,000 during its two-night Top 24 special filmed at a luxury Hawaiian resort.

The April 13 and 14 episodes aired from Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Kapolei where contestants performed in front of the judges amid palm trees, ocean views, and $4,150-a-night suites. Despite the picturesque setting, viewership fell short.

Sunday’s show drew 4,653,000 viewers — down from 5,123,000 the previous week. Monday’s episode fell even lower, with 3,878,000 tuning in compared to 4,145,000 on the Monday prior. That’s a total drop of 737,000 viewers over the week.

The Voice, Idol’s longtime competitor, reclaimed its lead on Monday, April 14, bringing in 4,137,000 viewers ahead of Idol’s 3,878,000. It marked a shift from the week before, when Idol had edged out the NBC series.

The lavish location wasn’t the only source of scrutiny. While judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan were shown enjoying drinks and views at the four-star resort, some fans questioned the production’s focus amid the competition.

Baylee’s performances have divided viewers. After his duet with Keilene, judge Lionel Richie said the performance was “too powerful” and that Baylee appeared “timid” next to her.

Carrie Underwood told him: “Moving forward, I need you to step it up!”

Baylee’s solo performance of Happy by Pharrell drew mixed reactions online. “I’m sorry I just don’t feel like it was a good performance for you,” one Instagram user wrote. Another added: “Ya’ll sent this girl home over him?”

A fourth viewer defended him: “If you watch the show from the beginning you should know this boy can sing. Give him some votes and let’s see what he does next week!!!”

Eliminations will be revealed Sunday, April 20 during the Songs of Faith Easter special.
