American Idols new judge Carrie Underwood tears | TV Shows
Country singer Carrie Underwood is set to make her debut as American Idol‘s new judge in Season 23 and it’s giving her the feels.
After she was spotted looking “nervous” on set, days after performing at Donald Trump‘s inauguration, Underwood filmed the auditions for the hit ABC singing competition show along with her co-judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.
Now, Season 23’s first look has revealed that those auditions often brought her to tears.
“This show is for people that have the talent, have a dream,” the Cry Pretty singer says in the new promo, “and they just need a chance.”
Underwood is seen tearing up as one contestant explains their emotional life story during the auditions.
“I think I can be honest and constructive, but still kind,” the 41-year-old teased last August after it was announced she was replacing longtime judge Katy Perry.
“And I think that’s the whole point, because people are coming in and it’s dreams. You’re part of somebody’s story from that moment on.”
Perry also gave her blessing to Underwood telling People in January: “She was born on that show. She actually truly knows. As artists, we’ve been in some sort of their shoes, but she has lived every single day. So I think she’s going to have a lot to offer anyone that’s willing to listen.”
The first look for Season 23 comes after a source told The U.S. Sun that Underwood looked uneasy as she filmed the show in Los Aneles with Richie and Bryan.
The trio were filming the Hollywood round on January 27 ahead of American Idol’s Season 23 premiere on March 9th on ABC.
The three music icons met up at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown LA for Idol’s Showstoppers round, the first time the judges, along with the Season 23 contestants, were filmed in front of a live audience.
According to an insider, the Before He Cheats singer was energetically introduced by an announcer as she walked on stage.
She wore a sequin pink blazer dress with matching shoes as Richie opened up his arms to welcome her to the judging panel.
As she walked out, she was met with a roar of applause and cheers from the studio audience who began chanting her name.
Despite the welcome, the source claimed to The U.S. Sun that Underwood seemed “tense” and “serious” throughout the duration of the filming.
They claimed: “She barely acknowledged the audience who kept chanting her name. The fans kept yelling ‘we love Carrie’ but she wouldn’t even turn around and wave most of the time – though she did a few times.
“Also, Carrie rarely danced during the contestant’s performances besides nodding along and shuffling to some rock songs.
“She did loosen up a bit by the end so she could’ve been nervous, especially since it was her first time judging in front of a live audience. But Lionel and Luke both had a lot more energy than Carrie did.”
