An American man has died and another is significantly injured after a knife assault in Portugal on Wednesday.
Authorities in Cascais, a in style coastal city close to Lisbon, say one of the 2 victims, a 34-year-old American man, was strolling back to his resort around 3 a.m. Wednesday when three suspects approached him.

One of the suspects began a verbal altercation, trying to contact the sufferer’s hat, then punching him 3 times in the face when he requested them to stop.
The sufferer tried to flee and called his buddy, a 35-year-old American man, for help. When his buddy arrived a few minutes later, one of the three suspects retrieved a knife from his car and stabbed both males in the face, arms, and back.
The 34-year-old sufferer sustained deep cuts to his face and chest and was shortly transported to a close by hospital. His buddy died at the scene. Police say the surviving sufferer is now recovering and is no longer in important condition.
Meanwhile, all three suspects fled the scene in their car. However, they’ve since been apprehended. One suspect, a 23-year-old Portuguese man with no felony report who labored at a close by bar, has been charged with murder. The remaining two suspects could face assault costs for their roles in the incident.
The assault was initially reported as an tried mugging gone incorrect. However, police told Portuguese news website Correio de Manhã that that they had ruled out theft, terrorism, and a hate crime as doable motives.
Instead, authorities say, “the events occurred in the context of an altercation between the aggressor and the two victims, initially only verbal and then with physical aggression.”
The State Department and the U.S. Embassy in Portugal didn’t immediately reply to the Daily Beast’s requests for remark. However, the State Department beforehand told GWN it was “aware” of the assault.
