WNBA star Angel Reese despatched Coco Gauff a two-word message after the tennis ace turned the youngest participant to win the WTA Finals since Maria Sharapova achieved the feat in 2004 as a 17-year-old. Gauff, 20, was in impressed kind on the season finale in Saudi Arabia as she defeated Qinwen Zheng within the showpiece match.

Gauff overcame Jessica Pegula and Iga Swiatek within the group levels of the match, earlier than seeing off Aryna Sabalenka within the semi-finals.

And she fought back from a set down to defeat Zheng 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 within the closing as she boosted her profession winnings by a whopping £3.7million.

After the ultimate, Gauff took to X (previously Twitter) to post a couple of celebratory photos. And she wrote: “Muah. Also, I know tend to focus on ‘doubters/haters’ but this one is really for all of my supporters! Ya’ll held it down for me win or lose!

“I thank you for that. I see you and I appreciate you. And I know some of you are a little bit petty like me so it does feel nice to silence them for a bit”.

Reese replied to the post by penning: “Queen!!! Congratssss.” And the love-in continued as Gauff responded: “Thank you queen.”

The two athletes have crossed paths on social media previously, with Gauff sending Reese a message after the Chicago Sky ahead introduced her determination to endure surgical procedure on her wrist in September after a sensational rookie season.

Reese, 22, took to X and wrote: “What a year. I never would have imagined the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they will be seeing more of in Year 2 lol.

“Through it all, I have showed that I belong in this league even when no one else believed.” And Gauff reached out to the basketball star in response to the post as she wrote on Instagram: “So proud of you.”

Gauff doubled her 2024 tennis earnings along with her victory within the Middle East. And after the ultimate she defined: “I didn’t know, like I knew it was some money, but I didn’t know that much.

“Oh gosh, I hope I’m like one of the highest-paid female tennis players this year or athletes so that’ll be exciting.

“Honestly, I wanted to win this for myself. I didn’t know that it was the biggest prize cheque on this Tour, I didn’t know anything about that. I knew there was money, but I try not to never play for this, but that’s cool.”
