Anthony Joshua hit with £11m bill as he weighs up | Boxing News

Anthony Joshua has handed over a good portion of his earnings to the UK taxman as he contemplates his future in boxing. The ex-heavyweight champion only stepped into the ring once last 12 months, defeating YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul with a knockout in Florida in December.

Joshua’s cut of the purse was a staggering £68.5million, but practically half of that was eaten up by tax, both in the United States and the UK. An estimated £25.6m went to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the US tax authority. Despite Florida not having a personal state income tax, Joshua was still subject to US income tax at the best fee since the bout came about on American soil. Meanwhile, a sum believed to be more than £5.5m was paid to the UK taxman.

Over the past 12 months, Joshua, who boasts a web value of approaching nearly £200m and has a number of profitable industrial offers, paid around £11m in UK tax, giving him one hundredth spot on the lately revealed Sunday Times UK Tax List.

In his first public video following the tragedy, Joshua struggled to maintain back tears as he spoke about dropping his two “brothers” and “lieutenants”, who had been very important members of his help workforce.

He said: “I understand what they wanted to do for their families, so what my goal is, is to continue to help them achieve their goals. I know in my corner of the world, I know what I’ll be doing.

“I do know what we’ll be doing to continue… I do not need to say their legacy, because I had a lot of those questions about legacy during my combat in Miami.

“It ain’t about legacy, it’s just about doing what is right and I know I am going to do what is right by them. I know what I have got to do. I’m going to do what is right by them, do what is right by their family and it is about what is important.”

His promoter Eddie Hearn believes a return to the ring will occur, but only “when the time is right.” Hearn careworn that such discussions wouldn’t happen in the instant future.

The Sunday Times Tax List options two Premier League stars in the top 100 – Manchester City‘s Erling Haaland and Liverpool ahead Mohamed Salah. Haaland has paid a substantial £17m in tax over the past 12 months, while Salah has contributed £14.5m to the public purse.
