Antiques Roadshow guest asks for chair as she | TV Shows

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left stunned after discovering the true worth of her beautiful treasure.

The series has captured hearts nationwide and swiftly established itself as a television staple since its 1979 premiere.

The cherished program eventually inspired an American version for viewers stateside.

During a visit to Albuquerque in 2014, one devoted fan brought along an artwork she had acquired for a mere $150.

She explained to the painting specialist how she became enchanted with the work after residing in Europe throughout the 1950s.

She disclosed: “Actually, Peterson went to Spain and studied with Sorolla, and they became great friends.

“He also introduced her to Louis Comfort Tiffany, and she painted Tiffany’s gardens on Long Island. Other than Spain, she also went to Paris, and she lived around the corner from Gertrude and Leo Stein. And they in turn introduced her to Picasso and Cezanne and Matisse.”

The pair’s conversation took a turn when they delved into the subject of the figure in the painting, who is portrayed gazing dreamily into the distance. The expert announced, “This piece is called The Answer, and it’s very mysterious.”

The guest speculated: “Maybe she was writing a Dear John letter, or maybe she had received a Dear John letter. I love the title, and it’s very mysterious. As I recall, I paid $150 for it.”

The dealer couldn’t conceal her surprise at the guest’s incredible find before disclosing the artwork’s actual worth on the program. She inquired: “$150? I think that a gallery in New York would be asking $300,000.”

Upon learning of the eye-popping six-figure appraisal, the guest humorously sought out a place to sit, exclaiming: “Where’s a chair? Now I need that chair!” It wasn’t long before enthusiasts swarmed the comments section online to express their admiration for the artist.

One admirer enthused: “LOVE Sorolla!! Have been to his Madrid studio/home three times! [smiling emoji, sun emoji]. Looking forward to going back in 2026 after the renovation is complete! [dancing woman emoji].”

Another concurred: “I remember this one! I fell in love with this painting and remember thinking how lucky its owner has been to live with it for 50 years! Hopefully more now!”.

A third chimed in: “Gorgeous painting – love the owner’s story too. Amazing!” while another added: “The first husband, who she met in Spain. That’s a story I want to hear! What an interesting life! Incredible painting.”
