The guest brought more than just memorabilia; they also had a letter vouching for the hat’s authenticity.

The letter stated: “I have been advised by womenSports Foundation that you have questioned the authenticity of the cap that Jack Nicholson wore in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.”

It continued, “My company represented the film during the release and I personally secured the cap from the wardrobe man at Fantasy Films, the production company for the movie.”

Appraiser Laura Woolley initially doubted the item’s legitimacy, admitting, “When I first saw this, I thought, ‘Oh, there’s no way.'”

However, she recognized the true worth lies in the documentation, asserting, “But the background, the real value here, is in this letter.”

She explained the necessity of such proof: ” If you didn’t have that letter, no one would believe you that it was the hat, because it would be too hard to match up.”

Woolley referenced a similar piece of film history: “The closest thing I could find was a jacket from The Shining, which, five or six years ago, sold for $6,500.”

She estimated the hat’s auction value confidently: “So if I were to put this into an auction, I would estimate it for no less than $4,000 to $6,000.”

Despite the potential windfall, the owner humorously revealed his terms for parting with the hat: “I didn’t expect that. The only thing I would give it up for is a night on the town with Jack Nicholson,” Woolley responded with amusement, suggesting a possible reunion: “If he wants it back, he can contact you.”
