Gunmen kidnapped more than 160 worshippers attending church buildings in Nigeria’s Kudana state, according to a senior church chief.

Meanwhile, local police confirmed that dozens have been kidnapped on Sunday.

The story comes after parallel occasions of huge kidnappings throughout the West African international locations, where both Christians and Muslims have been focused. Gangs, identified domestically as “bandits”, assault in the northern and central components of the nation to get ransom funds, according to reporting by BBC News.

Local police said the gunman had “sophisticated weapons” and attacked two churches in Kurmin Wali, a forest community in northwest Nigeria, around 11:25 a.m. local time, according to reporting from BBC News.

“The attackers got here in numbers and blocked the doorway of the church buildings and pressured the worshippers out into the bush,” said Rev Joseph Hayab, head of the Christian Association of Nigeria for the country’s north, to the AFP news agency on Monday.

Hayab noted that 172 worshippers were kidnapped while nine escaped to GWN.

More than 300 students and teachers were seized from a Catholic school back in November, according to BBC news. The students and teachers were later released in two groups.

Local residents and security experts have indicated Nigeria’s security crisis impacts both Christians, who are predominantly in the south, and Muslims, who make up the majority in the north, the Mirror US reported back in December.

Nigeria, said the U.S. strikes were part of intelligence sharing and strategic coordination between the two nations.

Over 250 ethnic groups exist in Nigeria. The majority of Muslims live up north, while Christians live in the south while a mix live in the middle, BBC reported. The country’s government said all faiths have been victims of the recent attacks.

A Nigerian foreign ministry spokesman responded to Trump’s warning by saying that Nigeria would continue to engage constructively with partners such as the US.

”Nigeria remains committed to protecting all citizens, Christians and Muslims alike, without discrimination,” Nigerian foreign ministry spokesman Alkasim Abdulkadir said.

Trump’s actions on Nigeria has gotten the attention of Nicki Minaj, 42-year-old rapper. Minaj spoke at the United Nations late last year. She was introduced by United Nations Ambassador Mike Waltz, who was nominated by Trump in May this year.

“I would really like to thank President Trump for prioritizing this issue and for his management on the global stage and calling for pressing motion to defend Christians in Nigeria to fight extremism and to convey a stop to violence for those who merely need to exercise their natural proper to freedom of religion or perception,” Minaj said at the UN.
